Summer has arrived! Get ready for "virtual conferencing"
Project ACTION will present "An Online Conference on Accessible Transportation" Aug. 3-6, 2009. With fiscal belt tightening, a need to stretch available resources, and ever-busy work schedules, it can be difficult to travel to conferences these days. This event will share presentations delivered at national meetings of the American Public Transportation Association and the Community Transportation Association of America.

Easter Seals Project ACTION offers resource for secondary school educators
Summer is also a time of planning and preparation for educators thinking about fall. ESPA can help, providing a new online product, "Travel Training for Student Success: The Route to Achieving Post-Secondary Student Outcomes." An introduction, booklet, slide shows, questionnaire, and linked ESPA Clearinghouse resources support young adults' needs for public transportation through travel training.

If you were unable to listen to ESPA's April 14 distance learning event, "Wheelchair Securement on Buses and Paratransit Vehicles," now you can pick up what you missed. A transcript of this excellent audio conference, which featured transportation consultant Douglas Cross, has been posted as a document linked through the main event page.

New FHA document addresses emergency evacuation of populations with special needs
Agencies having an interest in emergency transportation for older adults, people with low incomes, and people with disabilities will find a resource in the Federal Highway Administration’s Routes to Effective Evacuation Primer. It offers guidance for transportation during emergencies, including the need for advance planning to ensure maximum safety for people with special needs. The primer addresses key issues that state and local governments will face. Moreover, it provides recommendations to ensure that individuals with special needs are evacuated rapidly and efficiently to save and protect their lives and that resources are used efficiently and to their fullest capacity.
