Training & Conferences

Easter Seals Project ACTION Presents:

Getting There Together:
Supporting Accessible Sustainable Transportation in Our Community

A two-hour training activity designed to teach members of the general public how to work together to support accessible sustainable transportation (i.e., public transportation) in their community.

This simple curriculum is designed for use at any time, as a stand-alone program or as part of a larger training activity. Upon its completion, participants will:

  • understand the universal benefits of accessible sustainable transportation (i.e., social, economic, and environmental),
  • be familiar with accessible and sustainable transportation options in their community,
  • be familiar with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as it relates to public transportation,
  • be able to conduct an environmental barrier analysis, and
  • know how to collaborate with others to improve and strengthen existing transportation options.

Introduction

Imagine the carbon footprint of a person who cannot drive and walks or takes the bus to get to most of the places she needs to go. Imagine the carbon footprint of a person who chooses not to drive and walks or takes the bus to get to most of the places she needs to go. Could you tell the two apart?

Imagine a person with a disability who advocates for more accessible transportation in his community. Imagine a person who cares about the environment and advocates for more sustainable transportation in his community. Could you tell the two apart?

Public transportation is accessible and sustainable transportation. Consequently, disability advocates and environmental advocates share common interests when it comes to public transportation. Both support increased opportunities and resources for shared rides.  Both support walkable communities.

If both advocacy groups are heading in the same direction, why not try getting there together?

Tools of the curriculum

Getting There Together: Supporting Accessible Sustainable Transportation in Our Community includes:

1. PowerPoint Presentation with Talking Points
2. An Environmental Barrier Analysis and Options for Remedy Checklist
